Sonam Bajwa shines as a feisty heroine in this fun, family entertainer written and directed by Rupinder Inderjit.

Writer-director Rupinder Inderjit's latest Punjabi-language release Main Viyah Ni Karona Tere Naal is an enjoyable romantic comedy starring Sonam Bajwa and Gurnam Bhullar.

The film begins with wedding celebrations and Bajwa saying she is not going to get married. We are then taken back in time, to a period three months earlier. Pooran (Bhullar) is a happy-go-lucky man living with his mother in Canada. He makes videos on social media and his mother is worried he will end up marrying a foreigner.

She is anxious to get Pooran married to a Punjabi girl. Her resolve is fortified when she sees him hanging out with foreign women. On some pretext, she brings her son with her to Punjab, but the real reason is to find him a suitable match.

On the other hand, Mannat (Bajwa) has a boyfriend, Binder, and is eager to marry him. But he asks for time while she stalls the other proposals that come her way.

When Pooran learns the real reason why he has been brought to Punjab, he decides to go to war with his family and teach them a lesson. But when he is horrid to Mannat’s friend, she gives him a piece of her mind, setting him right. This leads to a friendship between the two. Pooran wants to escape from Punjab while Mannat wants to get married to her boyfriend. Together, they formulate a plan to get what they each want.

Pooran is completely at sea in India and keeps cribbing about the place, wanting to get back to Canada. He hates the place and everything about it. But Mannat shows him facets of Punjab, its people, and he begins to find his roots and his family.

Rupinder Inderjit gives us a feisty heroine who will not just choose her match but will have him on her own terms. Mannat speaks her mind, refuses to wait around for anyone to take action on her behalf and although she is eager to marry Binder, she starts having doubts as she sees facets of her boyfriend’s personality.

Sonam Bajwa is simply fabulous in the film, lighting up the screen with her presence. Bhullar plays the role of the innocent, Canada-settled man well. Together, their chemistry works delightfully for their love-hate relationship.

The romantic track goes hand-in-hand with the comedy and the hilarious dialogues are definitely one of the highlights of the film. Although the pace slackens in the second half, the subplot of Pooran’s blind grandmother who always dreamt of being a singer but couldn’t fulfil her dreams, is emotional and nicely executed.

The music, also composed by Bhullar, is melodious with the slow numbers, ‘Rakhin Dil Gura Kar Ke’ and ‘Aapan Vakh Ho Jaana Hai’, the romantic song ‘Jinna Jinna’, the folk dance number ‘O Le Gaya Kaalja’ and the catchy title song all creating the perfect ambience for the unfolding of the love story.

This is a fun, family entertainer not to be missed.

Main Viyah Ni Karona Tere Naal was released in theatres on 4 March 2022.
