It is perhaps the arrogance of youth that makes the young think that only they have sexually adventurous lives. Sonam Nair’s short film Khujli, starring Neena Gupta and Jackie Shroff, is a witty film that takes a look at a couple way past their prime trying to spice up their sex life.
Girdharilal (Shroff) and Roopmati (Gupta) seem to be a regular couple leading mundane lives until the father finds a pair of fluffy handcuffs in his son’s room. Enraged on principle but simultaneously perplexed by them, he tries to do the typical thing — blame the mother with the ‘your son is up to no good’ barb. But when she reveals knowledge about the object, he is taken by surprise and intrigued. They think of trying out some new stuff, but with the stage all set to spice things up, life intervenes.
Gupta and Shroff are the perfect choice for the couple and complement each other beautifully. Gupta’s naughtiness along with Shroff’s determination to prove he is still 'with it' makes for fun viewing. The part where the couple tries to imitate the movies with he being the villain and she the damsel in distress is hilarious but also so instinctive because, of course, when in doubt we think of the movies!
With a clever play on the title, the short film begins with the annoying itch that plagues the father and goes on to a very different kind of itch. A favourite scene is where Gupta is explaining the book 50 Shades of Grey and its contents to her husband, dropping the words 'kinky' and 'BDSM' while he listens with rapt attention.
The film was a winner at the Filmfare awards 2018 and is available as part of Terribly Tiny Tales on YouTube.
