Days Of Tafree review: 155 minutes of no story

South remakes have been a craze in mainstream Hindi cinema for many years now. But Days Of Tafree is a rare example of a Gujarati film being remade in Hindi. But remaking a regional blockbuster does not guarantee good results. Krishnadev Yagnik’s Days Of Tafree is the latest example of this. 

The film is the official remake of the Gujarati movie, Chhello Divas (2015), by the same director. The story revolves around four college students, Vicky (Ansh Bagri), Nikhil (Yash Soni), Suresh (Sanchay Goswami) and Daljeet aka Dhulla (Sarabjeet Bindra). They are the best of friends studying in final year in a college in Delhi. 

Vicky is a spoilt brat and womaniser. He is always at the receiving end of his father’s anger. Nikhil is just out of a bizarre break-up. It was a cup of coffee that triggered the split. Suresh is desperate to enter a relationship. But every time he tries to do away with his single status, fate has something ugly in store for him. Dhulla is the odd man out. He is forever angry and always ready to beat anyone up. 

Days Of Tafree provides a glimpse into the lives of today’s carefree college-going youth. There are various sequences that will bring back memories of your own college days. Some situational and whacky comical situations make you genuinely laugh out loud. The coffee sequence and the scene in which a professor beats up his students with a cricket bat stand out. 

But the basic requirement for any feature film is the story. Weirdly, that is nowhere to be seen in Days Of Tafree. The entire film just focuses on providing a sneak-peek into the lives of these characters. The build-up always acts as a platform for the main story to unfold. But over here, the entire duration is like a build-up. On numerous occasions there are incidents that hint the main plot will be unveiled, but to no avail. Seriously, how can you stretch a film without a story for 155 minutes? The ending portion does make you smile, but it is too late by then. 

The list of negatives does not end here though. At times, the makers try too hard to make you laugh and the result falls flat. This is the biggest reason for the length of the film becoming too much to sit through. For example, jokes revolving around one body part become an overdose. The songs don’t help the cause and merely add to the length of the film. 

Ansh Bagri brings in the right naughtiness needed for the role of Vicky. He is promising. Yash Soni, who played the same role in the original, gives a subdued performance and shows signs of acting talent. Sanchay Goswami is average. Sarabjeet Bindra’s antics induce laughter initially but become irritating later on. There is average support from Nimisha Mehta as Nikhil’s love interest, and Kinjal Rajpriya and Anuradha Mukharjee. Actors playing the maths professor and principal are hilarious. 

Overall, Days Of Tafree suffers from lack of a storyline.
