The Malayalam short starring Sajin Cherukayil is a light-hearted and fun film about an overbearing roommate.
Every person who has lived in a hostel or shared accommodation knows the importance of having a good roommate — someone who minds their own business and gives the other person privacy. Kiran Josey’s Malayalam short Bineeshettan Roommate, however, tells us what happens when one gets a roommate from hell!
The film takes place at a time long before the pandemic. It informs us, 'This story happened long back. So long ago that Corona was just a beer and TikTok could still be found on PlayStore!' Jijo is a working young man looking for an affordable home. His friend helps him locate one within his budget and Jijo finds that he has to share his room with Bineesh, an older man.
Intrusive and with complete disregard for Jijo’s privacy, Bineesh’s presence envelops Jijo like a fog, getting into everything that he does. Bineesh says odd things, gives out too much information, makes TikTok videos, and has no sense of personal space whatsoever. Although he does this supposedly out of care and treats his roommate like a younger brother, his overbearing presence becomes way too much for Jijo to handle. Although Jijo’s friend asks him to adjust and be more social, Jijo has had just about enough!
Bineeshettan Roommate is a light-hearted and fun film, made hilarious through the performance of Sajin Cherukayil, who plays the annoying roommate with aplomb. In an entertaining sequence, Jijo dreams of killing Bineesh out of sheer frustration! Even though the film concentrates on the tension between the two men, it offers an explanation for Bineesh’s attitude, humanizing the character and even managing to make him seem endearing.
