The film turns out to be much worse than its trailer.
The trailer of director Deepankar Senapati’s Aagaya Hero was misleading. It gave you the feeling that the film might be terrible. But, as they say, don’t judge a book by its cover. Wait till you see it to realise that it is a B-grade film. Technically, it marks Govinda’s debut as a writer and lyricist. But the content ensures that the celebrated actor of the 1990s also makes his B-grade debut with this one.
It is difficult to explain the storyline. It goes something like this. A man (Milind Shinde) dressed as a woman (without removing his moustache though) enters a mall and stealthily leaves a bag inside. Obviously, it contains a bomb. Similarly, there are other blasts in different parts of Mumbai. The commissioner of police is furious at the terrible law-and-order situation.
To make sure the perpetrators are punished, he ropes in inspector Ravindra Verma (Govinda). Verma is the epitome of fearlessness and honesty. He has his own way of solving cases, which he has named ‘Abhinay Chakra’. As per the name, it includes performing acts to trap wrongdoers. But his enemies are too strong and large in number.
The film starts off with a terrorist attack, but the issue is soon lost. What follows is a series of sequences with no flow or direction. You feel as though you are switching channels every few minutes, with all of them playing horrendous movies. The only common factor is, of course, Govinda. He tries supremely hard to prove he is still a ‘hero’. So, we see him randomly breaking into dance numbers, engaging in fights, cracking one-liners, etc. There is an unbelievable sequence where one of the bad guys even dreams about Govinda singing and dancing!
Aagaya Hero is shot and presented as if it were made by a group of students for their college project (no offence to any students; even they would probably do a better job). The quality of the print is pathetic. Add to that some irritating editing, effects and background score.
Normally, such films turn out to be unintentionally hilarious or fit right into the so-bad-that-it-is-good category. Recent examples are Wedding Anniversary (2017) and Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai (2017). Unfortunately, Aagaya Hero doesn’t provide that fun either to lovers of trashy films. It is loaded with shockingly unbelievable moments. Here are a few examples:
– An accused tries to prove himself innocent by shouting at the judge at the top of his voice. The judge is unmoved. Another accused justifies an act of his by saying he bought a girl, which gives him all rights over her. The judge is still unmoved. Soon, bullets are fired at the witness. The judge is not only unmoved but even resumes proceedings! But there is more to it. It is later found that the judge is a co-conspirator in the case!
– A young woman is chased by goons inside her college. She climbs the college building to save herself. As there is no way out, she jumps to her death. But a cop says they can’t do anything in the case as no complaint has been filed. Huh?
– Govinda enters a bedroom where a couple is sleeping almost naked. The actor makes the woman slap the man. Both start blaming each other but are unable to notice that Govinda is sitting right there, on the bed!
– A skimpily clad woman performs an item number with cheap dance moves right besides an idol of Shiva. Where is our sanskari film certification board? The makers are also allowed words like ‘bh**va’ and ‘ga**u’ without an Adults Only certificate. By the way, Central Board of Film Certification chairman Pahlaj Nihalani is given ‘special thanks’ credit. Maybe that explains it.
It would be an understatement to say Govinda’s performance is disappointing. He seems like a robot that is programmed to perform various actions without any soul. And if you have grown up watching and enjoying his films, you are bound to be saddened by this movie.
The film also stars some quality performers like Ashutosh Rana, Makarand Deshpande, Murli Sharma and Milind Shinde. The only explanation might be that they were blackmailed to act in this film.
