Vasant Dev Biography

Vasant Dev is an Indian writer and lyricist who has worked in a number of films from India's parallel cinema movement during the 1980s. As a writer, Dev wrote dialogues for films such as Andha Yudh (1987), Nasoor (1985), Kamla (1985), and Ardha Satya (1983).

In the beginning of his career, Dev worked with veteran filmmaker, Shyam Benegal on his film Bhumka: The Role (1977) as a dialogue writer. With that, the New Wave Cinema of India was ushered in, and he worked with a great many film projects in that period of time. The haunting verses of Mahesh Bhatt's Saaransh (1984) got Dev the prestigious National Film Award for the Best Lyrics and he repeated his success in the next year, with his lyrical rendition in Girish Karnad's Utsav (1984) that catapulted him into stardom and won him his first Filmfare Award.

He also served as a writer on the renowned television series, Bharat Ek Khoj (1988).

Besides serving as a dialogue writer and song-writer for films, Dev has also translated celebrated playwright Vijay Tendulkar's eponymous Marathi play, Ghasiram Kotwal (1972) into Hindi.
