Sushant Singh Rajput became a rage on television after he was seen as the lead in Ekta Kapoor’s
Pavitra Rishta (2009-11) on Zee TV. The actor started off with theatre, working with Nadira Babbar’s group. He also assisted director Mohit Suri during the making of
Raaz: The Mystery Continues (2009). By the time he made his debut in the Hindi film industry, he had done his homework and was well-prepared. Born on 21 January, 1986 in a Rajput family, he is the youngest and only brother of three sisters. His sister Mitu Singh is a top cricketer. He aspired to become an engineer as a young boy and even joined the Delhi College of Engineering, with a scholarship. However, after watching choreographer Shiamak Davar's dance troupe, he joined the same and learned contemporary dance. He even performed at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and Filmfare Awards with the troupe. Rajput also joined theatre classes with Barry John and it was then that he decided he wanted to become an actor. Therefore, he made his way to Mumbai where he joined Ashley Lobo's dance group and learnt the martial arts from Allan Amin.
He first appeared on television in Balaji Telefilms'
Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil (2008) on Star Plus. But the show that propelled Rajput to new heights of stardom was Balaji Telefilms'
Pavitra Rishta on Zee TV in which he plays the lead role of a soft spoken, shy mechanic called Manav Deshmukh.
In 2010, he participated in Sony Entertainment Television's Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. His first step in the film industry was when he auditioned for Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che! (2013) and bagged the role of one of the three leads. Rajput’s debut film was critically acclaimed. It was a tremendous commercial success and Rajput garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews for his portrayal of Ishaan Bhatt and it won him the Screen Award and Guild Award for the Best Male Debut.
His second movie was Shuddh Desi Romance (2013) opposite Parineeti Chopra and Vaani Kapoor. This film was also a success and after this, he was not only noticed by a lot of eminent directors but also many critics. He also played a supporting role in the super hit film PK (2014) alongside Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma.
His latest appearance on screen has been in Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (2015) where he plays the lead role of the young detective. It acquired good reviews from critics and his performance was commended.
