Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan, popularly known as Salman Khan, is the son of the legendary veteran Hindi scriptwriter, Salim Khan. His mother’s name is Salma Khan, and his step-mother is Helen, a prominent personality in the history of Hindi cinema. He made his debut with a small role in Biwi Ho Toh Aisi (1988). It was his second film Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), directed by Sooraj Barjatya that became a super hit and made him a star. It was one of the highest grossing films of its time and started Salman’s journey to super stardom. He also went on to work in a number of films in collaboration with Barjatya, including the recent Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015). After his new-found success, he starred in several commercially successful films such as Saajan (1991), Karan Arjun (1995), Jeet (1996), and Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya (1998), all of which got him nominations for Filmfare Awards. Apart from that, his most popular films of this era include Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), Biwi No.1 (1999), and Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999). He also won a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hain (1998). His other notable films that were released later were Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Tere Naam (2003), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004) and Partner (2007). Around this time many of his films were flops at the box office including his Hollywood film, Marigold – An Adventure in India. However, in 2009, with his hit film Wanted (2009), Salman’s career again went on a roaring upswing with consecutive hits, establishing him as the most bankable star at the box office. This success was followed by the super-hit Dabangg (2010), Ready (2011), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012) and Dabangg 2 (2012), all making huge profits. Salman’s films have been the highest grossing films of the year nine times, a record that remains unbroken. His role in Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) was also highly appreciated and got him the National Film Award for the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. His upcoming release, Sultan (2016) will see him playing the role of an acclaimed wrestler alongside Anushka Sharma. He has also worked as producer on two films, one being the Sooraj Pancholi starrer Hero (2015) as well as an international production titled Dr. Cabbie (2014). Salman’s stint in television has also been highly successful. In 2008, he hosted 10 Ka Dum on Sony, which earned high TRPs. He hosted it again in 2009. In 2010, he hosted Bigg Boss 4 which got a great response owing to Salman’s unique light-hearted style of anchoring. He continued to host Bigg Boss in its fifth, sixth and seventh seasons as well. Salman has been involved in various charities during his career. He has founded an NGO called ‘Being Human’ which sells T-shirts and other products. The proceeds were used to help the underprivileged in healthcare and education. On the other hand, he has also been involved in numerous controversies. The infamous hit-and-run case of 2002 ended up with him being acquitted of all charges in 2015. He was also given a sentence for hunting an endangered species of deer during the filming of Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999).
