He has the credit of writing stories and screenplays for over 90 films. One of the most prominent films of his career include Brahmachari (1968), for which he was awarded the Filmfare Best Story Award.
The year 1969 saw Bhowmick being nominated for films like Aaradhana (1969) and Pehchaan (1970).
In the 1970s, Bhowmick wrote stories for successful films like Aan Milo Sajna (1970), Caravan (1971), Be-Imaan (1972) Dost (1974), Khel Khel Mein (1975), Hum Kisise Kum Naheen (1977), and Gol Maal (1979). The critics were very impressed with his way storytelling that always seemed to draw in audiences and deliver great box office hits.
His films in the 1980s include Karz (1980), Do Aur Do Paanch (1980), Bemisal (1982), Zamaane Ko Dikhana Hai (1981), Nastik (1983), Andar Baahar (1984), Saaheb (1985) and Karma (1986). Apart from working in the Hindi film industry, Bhowmick has also worked with the Tamil industry. He has co-written the Tamil comedy film Thillu Mullu (1981), which was a remake of his own comedy film Gol Maal (1979).
He continued to write different and well-structured films in the 1990s as well. Some of his best works of this period were Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994), Yeh Dillagi (1994), Karan Arjun (1995), Koyla (1997), Soldier (1998), Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999) and Taal (1999). All these films opened to rave reviews and some have even become cult classics.
He continued to write stories for many blockbuster films including Koi Mil Gaya (2003) and Krissh (2006). Both the films were commercially and critically well appreciated.
Bhowmick has worked with some of the leading directors of the industry including Shakti Shamanta, Subhash Ghai, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Nasir Hussain and Rakesh Roshan. He directed only one film, starring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore called Raja Rani (1973).
He had married actress Kalpana, but later divorced her. He passed away on 12 April 2011, leaving behind a long legacy of screenwriting. His last projects were in collaboration with other screenwriters on the films Villu (2009) and Yuvvraaj (2008).
