Seth was born in 1942, to an Anglo-Indian Muslim mother and a Hindu father, who was a biochemistry Professor in Patna Medical College. He did his schooling from The Doon School and acquired a graduation degree in History from St Stephen's College. He also attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art which is where he honed his talent.
Peter Brook's production, A Midsummer Night's Dream (1972) was Seth’s first big break in acting. He then made his feature film debut with Richard Lester's Juggernaut (1974). However, dissatisfied with being typecast only for ethnic roles, he returned home. In India, he took up the career of an editor and journalist until the early 1980s.
But when director Richard Attenborough offered him a significant role in Gandhi (1982), he returned to acting gladly. The movie not only boosted his acting career, but also won him many accolades. After this comeback film, he was seen yet again as a villain in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984).
After several successful films, Seth returned to England for a small part in David Lean’s A Passage to India (1984). He was then cast for the role of the socialist immigrant journalist, Papa (Omar's father) in director Stephen Frears’ and writer Hanif Kureishi's My Beautiful Laundrette (1985). In 1991, he was again seen in Kureshi’s directorial feature debut, London Kills Me (1991).
He then appeared in two films that won him prestigious awards. While Flight (1995) won him the Sochi International Film Festival Award for the Best Actor, Such a Long Journey (1988) won him the Genie Award.
In 2001, Seth appeared in Mira Nair’s acclaimed Monsoon Wedding (2001), and since then he has continued working steadily in British and American films. Two years later, he was seen playing the lead role in an American film Cosmopolitan (2003), which was broadcast nationally on PBS. He then went on to work in the Hindi film industry with Guru (2007) and the Salman Khan starrer Ek Tha Tiger (2012). The film received both mixed and positive reviews. The masses and the critics loved his performance in the film, and the international actor achieved fame within the country.
