Rohit Khattar Biography

Khattar's credits as producer and executive producer include Julie Taymor's The Tempest (2010), Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Mirzya (2016), The Hungry (2017), an Indo-UK co-production which was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, Kaalakaandi (2017) starring Saif Ali Khan, Cold War (2018), which was nominated for three Academy Awards, and, most recently, Bombay Rose, which was the opening film at Critics Week at the Venice International Film Festival and has been tipped by Variety and other publications as a contender for Best Feature Animation for the Oscars 2021.
Khattar is also chairman of Cinestaan AA Distributors (a joint venture between AA Films and Cinestaan Film Company), which is the leading overseas distributor of Indian films. It has distributed over 20 films in the last three years, including Baahubali 2 (2017), Badhaai Ho (2018), Gully Boy (2019), Bharat (2019) and Thappad (2020).
Khattar had forged a partnership with the Sundance Institute founded by Robert Redford which gave birth to the Mumbai Mantra-Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab in India and the Sundance Institute Mahindra Global Filmmaking award, which developed award-winning scripts like Margarita With A Straw (2015), Masaan (2015) and Umrika (2016). These initiatives catalyzed the mentoring of 24 screenwriters and awards for 16 filmmakers. This then pivoted into the Cinestaan India’s Storytellers Contest with a jury consisting of Anjum Rajabali, Rajkumar Hirani, Juhi Chaturvedi and Aamir Khan.
Khattar’s passion for cinema pushed him to spearhead the chronicling of the history of Indian cinema which he had started as a hobby many years ago. This led to the birth of another company promoted by him and Anand Mahindra called Cinestaan Digital Pvt Ltd (CDPL), which has built a comprehensive destination for Indian cinema on the internet (www.cinestaan.com). CDPL has also created an exciting app called Pocketwala which is a completely free offline video playing and sharing platform for the unserved and underserved of India.
