Actor and international pop singer, Priyanka Chopra began her career in films post her modelling stint. She won the title of Miss World in the year 2000 and subsequently entered the film industry. Over the years, she established herself within the industry for her performances in Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion (2008), Vishal Bhardwaj's 7 Khoon Maaf (2009), and Anurag Basu's Barfi (2012). Born in Jamshedpur, Priyanka spent a few years of her schooling in the United States. At the age of eighteen, Chopra won the title of Miss World which shot her to instant fame and opened the door to film offers. She made her debut with the Tamil film Thamizhan (2002) and Hindi film The Hero: Love Story of a Spy (2002). However she got recognition with the film, Aitraaz (2004) for which Chopra won the Filmfare Award for the Best Actor in a Negative Role. She had a string of unsuccessful films after that, but bounced back with Rohan Shetty’s Bluffmaster (2005) and Krrish (2006) in the following year. In the coming years, Chopra worked with some of the top filmmakers within Hindi cinema and worked in many successful films such as Don (2006), Kaminey (2009), 7 Khoon Maaf (2011) and Barfi (2012). In 2008, she received the coveted National Film Award for Best Actress for her critically acclaimed role in Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion (2008). Her latest roles in Mary Kom (2014) and Bajirao Mastani (2015) were praised, and her portrayal of a strong, independent female lead got her much critical acclaim. She is also working on the American television series Quantico (2015), as the lead actor. In 2013, Chopra made her debut as a singer and released her first hit single, ‘In My City’, which was a mix of pop, hip-hop, and electro with contemporary Indian music. Her songs are an attempt to blend the East and West, and Chopra collaborated with leading producers and songwriters in Hollywood like RedOne, Brian Kennedy, Bonnie McKee, and Ester Dean. The singles “Exotic”, and “I Can’t Make You Love Me” were recorded in Los Angeles, London, and Ibiza, and garnered Chopra good sales in domestic markets. Apart from her successful career as an actor and singer, Priyanka Chopra has undertaken many humanitarian endeavours. She joined the literacy programs by CAF and CII. Chopra also serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and has worked on a number of social issues including children’s rights and promotion of female education in India. She recently received the Padma Shri from the Government of India in 2016, and is on the path to making herself a well-established domestic and international figure.
