Neetu Singh was born in Delhi to Darshan and Rajee Singh on 8 July 1958. Later the family moved to Bombay where she did her schooling from Hill Grange High School on Peddar Road. It is said that the actress Vyjayanthimala was the one who spotted the young Neetu Singh to play a role in Suraj (1966) and thus began her career as a child artist with the name Baby Sonia. She did a couple of films including Dus Lakh (1966), Do Kaliyan (1968) where she played a double role, Waaris (1969) and Pavitra Paapi (1970). Neetu Singh started acting as a full time actress with Rickshawala (1973) which failed to make a mark but a song in the hit film Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973) made her famous. It was “Lekar hum deewana dil…” which got Neetu noticed for her spirited and lively performance.

Soon she got signed as the leading lady for various films. She worked with Rishi Kapoor in more than ten films and the pair became a sensation in the country for their portrayal of youthful romance in films like Khel Khel Mein (1975), Rafoo Chakkar (1975) and Amar Akbar Anthony (1977).

Although on the one hand she got lively chirpy roles, on the other hand Neetu also showcased her talent for intense emotional roles in films like Kabhi Kabhie: Love Is Life (1976) and Doosra Aadmi (1977).

Very soon, she established herself as one of the top actresses of the 70s and worked with other top actors of the time including Amitabh Bachchan in Adalat (1976), Parvarish (1977), The Great Gambler (1979) and Yaarana (1981); with Rajesh Khanna in Chakravyuha (1978); with Randhir Kapoor in Kasme Vaade (1978); with Shashi Kapoor in Deewaar (1975); with Shatrughan Sinha in Kaala Patthar (1979), and with Jitendra in Dharam Veer (1977) and Priyatama (1978).

The on-screen romance with Rishi Kapoor soon turned into an off-screen relation and the couple got married in 1979 when Neetu Singh was at the peak of her career. Soon after marriage she decided to retire from films.

Interestingly, she made her comeback after almost 26 years in the film Love Aaj Kal (2009) opposite husband Rishi Kapoor and also did the comedy Do Dooni Char (2010) with him for which she received a lot of appreciation. She also got the opportunity to work with Yash Chopra in his last film Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) opposite Rishi Kapoor again.

Neetu Kapoor continues to work with films and is often seen in media events and award ceremonies with her family. Even today she lights up the screen with her charming personality.
