Neena Gupta Biography

Neena Gupta is an Indian film and television actress. She studied at The Lawrence School, Sanawar, Himachal Pradesh and then pursued a master's degree in Sanskrit, followed by an MPhil.

Gupta is known for her work in art films. She has worked with some of the finest directors in Indian cinema like Shyam Benegal and the late G Aravindan. She has also acted in international movies like Gandhi (1982), The Deceivers (1988), In Custody (1994) and Cotton Mary (1999). She featured in the superhit song 'Choli Ke Peeche' from Subhash Ghai's film Khal Nayak (1993) starring Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit.

Neena Gupta has played prominent roles in many movies. Some of these are Yeh Nazdeekiyan (1982), Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (1983), Utsav (1984), Swarg (1990), Woh Chokri (1994), Veer (2010), Khujli (2017) and Veere Di Wedding (2018). She won the National award for Best Supporting Actress for Woh Chokri in 1994.

She made the telefilm Lajwanti based on Rajinder Singh Bedi's classic short story. She also directed and produced the movie Bazar Sitaram (1993) that won the National award for Best First Non-Feature Film of a Director.

Gupta gained popularity on Indian television with the show Khandaan (1985). She then starred in shows like Buniyaad (1986), Yatra (1986), Mirza Ghalib (1987), Bharat Ek Khoj (1988), Gul Gulshan Gulfam (1988) and Dard (1994). She also appeared in the popular Indian sitcom Shrimaan Shrimati, which was aired on Doordarshan (1994-1999).

Her next television show was Gumraah (1995). She also wrote, directed and acted in the serial Saans that was premiered on the STAR Plus channel in 1998. In 2000, she directed and starred in the show Siski. Her next shows were Chitthi (2003), Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin (2003), Meri Biwi Ka Jawab Nahin (2004), Saat Phere: Saloni Ka Safar (2005) and Dil Se Diya Vachan (2010). She also hosted the TV show Kamzor Kadii Kaun, the Indian version of the game show The Weakest Link.

Neena Gupta has written the web-series Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain (2018). Neena Gupta and actor Rajendra Gupta formed a production team called Sahaj Productions. A play called Soorya Ki Antim Kiran Se Soorya Ki Paheli Kiran Tak was produced under this banner. 

She is married to Vivek Mishra, a Delhi-based chartered accountant, whom she first met in 2002. They got married six years later when Mishra surprised her with a proposal at a relative’s wedding. Gupta has a daughter, Masaba, a fashion designer, with former West Indies cricket captain Vivian Richards.
