Born as Rimpy Kaur Gill, the acclaimed actress Mahie Gill was born in Chandigarh, on 19 December, 1975. She earned a Masters degree in Theater from Punjab University in 1998. However, she had to wait until 2003 to get her first break in the Hindi film industry with the Punjabi based film Hawayein (2003). She also worked in theatre and a few Punjabi films. The talented actress then caught everyone’s attention in the film Dev.D (2009) starring opposite Abhay Deol. Her role as the new age Paro captivated the audience and also earned her the Filmfare Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actress as well as the International Indian Film Academy Award for the Best Debut. She was next seen in Gulaal (2009) where her performance was once again appreciated. In 2010, she got the opportunity to work in the Salman Khan-starrer Dabangg (2010), although she did not play a major role in the film. The actress also showed off her dance skills in an item number in the multi-starrer Mirch (2010).

Nevertheless, she continued to enthral audiences with her excellent performances. Her next film Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster (2011), fetched her much appreciation from critics and audiences alike. Her impressive performance in the sequel of this film, Sahib, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns (2013) too was lauded. Paan Singh Tomar (2012) and Dabangg 2 (2012), which were both commercial hits, also got her great acclaim. She played the new age ‘Mona Darling’ in the remake Zanjeer (2013). Her most recent appearance has been in the film Gang of Ghosts (2014), the official Hindi remake of the critically acclaimed original Bengali film Bhooter Bhabishyat (2012).

All these films showcased the versatility and talent of this actress. Gill has often chosen unconventional roles in order to carve her own path to stardom. She has successfully made a mark in critical as well as commercial movies.
