Born : 07 September 1953

Lillete Dubey is an Indian theatre personality, television and film actor and director. She has worked in a number of films such as Monsoon Wedding (2001), Kal Ho Na Ho (2003), and Bow Barracks Forever (2004). She has also starred alongside Hollywood heavyweights, Maggie Smith, Judi Dench and Bill Nighy in the British film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012).

While growing up, Dubey was influenced by a number of figures, as her mother was a major in the army while her father was an engineer by profession. Moving through a number of cities while growing up, Lillete began learning Hindustani vocal music at the tender age of five and was soon drawn towards theatre. At the age of fifteen she began her rendezvous with theatre in Pune. One of her earliest prominent roles was that of Cecily in The Importance of Being Earnest.

Soon Dubey joined theatre full-time and has since directed a number of plays. In the year 1991, she established The Primetime Theatre Company, which has worked very closely with original Indian writing. She has directed over 21 plays, the most notable one being Mahesh Dattani's Dance like a Man, credited as the longest running play in English. The play completed 497 shows across the globe, including its two week run on Broadway.

Dubey ventured into films much later in her life. She was in her 40s when she first appeared on screen with Shyam Benegal's Zubeidaa (2001). Since then, Dubey has been offered different kinds of roles within Hindi cinema and has worked with successful film actors and directors in films such as Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001), Monsoon Wedding (2001), Om Jai Jagadish (2002), Pinjar (2003), Johnny (2003), and  Chalte Chalte (2003). Her supporting roles in the hit films Baghban (2003) and Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) gained her special appreciation. In all these films, she has given varied performances and dabbled with various genres, from historical to drama, from comedy to serious, and from mainstream masala flicks to realist parallel films.

Dubey believes that she is more challenged by theatre than films, but continues to work in both mediums as long as her characters are challenging. She is married and has two daughters named Ira Dubey and Neha Dubey, both of whom are also theatre and film actors.

Lillete Dubey continues to make her strong presence felt on screen, and recently appeared in the films Bhaiyyaji Superhitt (2015) and Desi Magic (2015).
