Kunal Kohli is a prominent film director and producer, who has also took up acting. Kunal Kohli started his career on television with a show called
Chalo Cinema in which he reviewed weekly releases. He also directed some of the earliest music videos produced in the country, including Bally Sagoo’s “Mera laung gawacha” and Bali Brahmabhatt’s “Tere bin jeena nahin” giving these songs a distinctive visual narrative. Kunal Kohli started his cinematic journey with Yash Raj Films where he directed Hrithik Roshan, Rani Mukherji and Kareena Kapoor in
Mujhse Dosti Karoge! (2002). The film opened to a lukewarm response. His next,
Hum Tum (2004), derived from the Hollywood romantic comedy
When Harry Met Sally (1989), starred Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherji as characters who meet in their early 20s and forge a long friendship that eventually culminates in love. The film was a critical and commercial hit, catching the pulse of young Indians. Its crisp dialogues and wit struck a chord, as did the music. In particular, the title track was a resounding hit. The film won five Filmfare Awards, including for Best Director.
Kunal Kohli's third film
Fanaa (2005) was a love story-cum-action thriller set partially in Kashmir. It brought Kajol back as leading lady for the first time after her marriage to Ajay Devgn. Co-starring Aamir Khan as her lover who goes missing from her life only to resurface as a terrorist, the film was banned in Gujarat following Aamir Khan’s support of the Narmada Bachao Andolan but was a huge success elsewhere in the country and overseas.
Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic (2008) was Kunal Kohli's fourth and last film under the YRF banner. Despite the presence of big names like Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherji, the film did not fare well. The director, who by then had already launched his own company, Kunal Kohli Productions, parted ways with the Chopras to turn independent producer with Danish Aslam’s Break Ke Baad (2010). It had a similar trajectory to Hum Tum (2004) but with younger stars Imraan Khan and Deepika Padukone.
Kunal Kohli’s ambitious undertaking Teri Meri Kahaani (2012) featured Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra as lovers whose destinies keep colliding over generations. The film did well at the box office. His latest release was Phir Se... (2015), starring himself and Jennifer Winget.
Kunal Kohli also served as a judge on the second edition of the popular reality dance show Nach Baliye.
