Kunal Ganjawala Biography

Born : 14 April 1972, in Pune,Maharashtra,India

Well-known singer Kunal Ganjawala was born on 14th April, 1972. Oblivious to the fact that he had a singer’s voice, he aimed to have a career as an actor or a chartered accountant. He realized his potential as a singer when he started winning singing competitions in college.  With further encouragement from his family, Ganjawala went on to formally learn music from the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan under Sudhindra Bhaumick.

His first singing assignment was a jingle titled “Doodh Doodh”, composed by Ranjit Barot for an advertisement for the Operation Flood movement. He got his first opportunity as a playback singer in the Hindi film industry with Ab Ke Baras (2002). Though the film’s music did not give him instant recognition with the masses, he was noticed by music directors and he started getting more offers.

After this, he was the playback singer for a number of films like Saathiya (2002), Indian Babu (2003), Paisa Vasool (2004), Khakee (2004), Rudraksh (2004), Dhoom (2004) and Meenaxi (2004). All these films helped him make a position for himself in the industry. However, Ganjawala’s breakthrough hit song was ‘Bheege Honth Tere’, from Murder (2004). The song was a chartbuster and earned him a place among the top singers in the music industry. It was for this song that he won a multitude of awards, including the International Indian Film Academy Award and the Zee Cine Award for Best Male Playback, and the Filmfare R D Burman Award for New Music Talent.

After making his mark in Hindi films, Ganjawala headed south. In 2005, his first song in Kannada ‘Neene Neene’ for the film Akash (2005), turned out to be a hit. However, his success in South finally saw its peak with song ‘Onde Ondu Sari’ from the Kannada blockbuster film Mungaru Male (2006). The talented man has sung in other Indian languages like Tamil, Marathi, Punjabi, Odia, Bengali, Telugu, Assamese and Sindhi. He has lent his voice for a Punjabi album ‘Channa Ve’ by DJ Anit and music director Santokh Singh which was also a huge hit.

He has also judged the singing competition ‘Amul Star Voice of India’ with singer Shreya Ghoshal and music director Pritam.
