Kabir Bedi

Handsome and dashing actor Kabir Bedi was born to a Punjabi Sikh father and British mother on 16 January 1946. He completed his schooling from Sherwood College, Nainital, and earned his graduation degree from St. Stephen's College, Delhi, where he studied History.  His father, Baba Pyare Lal Singh Bedi, was a writer and his mother, Freda was a professor and social worker who took ordination in Tibetan Buddhism.

Kabir Bedi began his acting career with theatre and gradually moved to Hindi cinema. From Hindi cinema, he worked in several international productions and became a well-known actor in Europe. 
He made his Hindi film debut with OP Ralhan’s Hulchul (1971), which was also Zeenal Aman’s debut film. He then acted in a spate of films like Seema (1971), Mahesh Bhatt’s Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain (1974), Ishq Ishq Ishq (1974) which was directed by Dev Anand, Nagin (1976) etc.

In 1976, he played the titular role of a young Indian Prince in the Italian TV series Sandokan. Based on the novels of Emilio Salgari, the story is of a Prince, whose kingdom has been occupied by the British. Sandokan fights against the British by becoming captain of a den of pirates. The six part series was a huge success and made Bedi an international star. Thereafter he acted in several international productions but his big moment in Hollywood came with the James Bond film Octopussy (1983). Starring Roger Moore as Bond, Bedi played Kamal Khan’s (Louis Jourdan) bodyguard Gobinda.

He also had an illustrious career in American and European television and has appeared on iconic shows like Dynasty, General Hospital, Knight Rider, The Bold and the Beautiful, amongst several others. 

While working on his international projects, Bedi continued working in India. In 1988, the film Khoon Bhari Maang starring Rekha and Sonu Walia became a massive hit. Thereafter, he was a part of several films such as Kurbaan (1991), Vishkanya (1991), Dil Aashna Hai (1992) to the more recent Main Hoon Na (2004), Kites (2010), Chakravyuh (2012). He was also a part of Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale (2015) and Ashutosh Gowariker’s  Mohenjo Daro (2016). 

Bedi has also been a part of several theatre productions and has played a range of characters. In 2011, he played Emperor Shah Jahan, in ‘Taj’, a play written by John Murrell, a renowned Canadian playwright for the Luminato Festival in Toronto. 

He is a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as well as of the Screen Actors Guild. In 2010, Bedi was given the highest ranking civilian honour given by the Italian republic and officially knighted as Cavaliere (Knight) of the 'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana'.
