Brawny Bollywood actor and producer John Abraham was born in 1972 to a Malayali Nasrani father and a Gujarati Parsi mother. He did his schooling from the renowned Bombay Scottish School in Mumbai and then earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Jai Hind College. He also has an MMS degree from MET College. The good looking actor, who was seen in many music videos in his younger days, worked as a media planner initially. In 1999, he won the Gladrags Manhunt Contest and went to Philippines to participate in Manhunt International. After this, he got modeling assignments in Hong Kong, London and New York City. He started becoming a known face due to a number of commercial advertisements and music videos for singers like Pankaj Udhas, Hans Raj Hans and Babul Supriyo. However, the aspiring actor juggled his modeling career along with an acting course from the Kishore Namit Kapoor acting laboratory. His debut film
Jism (2003) with Bipasha Basu grabbed eyeballs for its steamy scenes. The film received mixed reviews, but the actor did not go unnoticed. Abraham’s second film in the same year –
Saaya (2003)–received fair reviews. In 2004, he garnered much acclaim from fans through his performances in movies like
Aetbaar (2004),
Paap (2004) and lastly,
Dhoom (2004), where Abraham became immortalised as the handsome villain on the motorbike. This role won him many awards as well, including the Zee Cine Award and the IIFA Award for the Best Villain.
In 2005, the model-turned actor starred in the supernatural thriller
Kaal (2005) and comedy
Garam Masala (2005) - both of which did well at the box-office and his performances were praised. Later in the same year, he played a major role in the critically acclaimed film,
Water (2005), which was based on the tragic fate of Hindu widows during the 1930s. The film not only did well domestically, but was also popular internationally and nominated for the many popular awards. It also proved John Abraham's prowess as an actor capable of undertaking a variety of roles.
The next year, Abraham went on to star in hit films like Zinda (2006), Taxi No. 9211: Nau Do Gyarah (2006) and Kabul Express (2006). In 2008, he starred in Dostana (2008), along with Priyanka Chopra and Abhishek Bachchan. He continued to make his mark in the years after that with movies like New York (2009), Aashayein (2011), Jhootha Hi Sahi (2011), Force (2011), Desi Boyz (2011) and Housefull 2 (2012). Though not all movies got the box-office cash registers ringing, the actor continued to add to his fan list. His journey as an actor continued with movies like Race 2 (2013), I, Me, Aur Main (2013) and Shootout At Wadala (2013).
He turned producer with Vicky Donor (2012), which won him the prestigious National Film Award for the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. He then went on to his next production project, Madras Cafe (2013), which was also successful, He has been keen on experimenting in various aspects of film. He recently came back into the limelight as an actor, with the film Rocky Handsome (2016).
