Gurdas Maan

Gurdas Maan is an Indian musician and choreographer and actor. He was born on January 4, 1957 to Sardar Gurdev Singh Maan and Bibi Tej Kaur in Faridkot, Punjab.  He completed his schooling in Malout, and moved to Patiala for his postgraduate studies in Physical Education from the National Sports Institute. During his college years, he remained keenly interested in theatre as well as singing and song-writing, but began his career by working for the Punjab State Electricity Board.

In 1980, he entered the music industry with a bang when his Punjabi single “Dil Da Mamla Hai” became hugely successful after it was aired on television at the end of the year. While the song launched his music career instantly, he also made his entry into cinema soon after, acting in the Punjabi film Ucha Dar Babe Nanak Da (1982). He acted in numerous Punjabi as well as Hindi films in the following years, including Long Da Lishkara (1986), Wanted: Gurdas Mann Dead or Alive (1994), Shaheed-E-Mohabbat (1999), Des Hoya Pardes (2004), Waris Shah- Ishq Da Waaris (2006),  Sukhmani  (2010), and most recently in Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar (2014), which is directed by his wife Manjeet Maan, whose talent he greatly admires. He is also the proud recipient of the UK Asian Music Awards in 2009 for his album "Boot Polishan" under the category of Best International Album. Apart from that, Waris Shah – Ishq Da Waaris (2006) was the first Punjabi film nominated for an Academy Award.

Apart from his roles in Hindi and Punjabi films, Maan has also acted in Tamil cinema. He is fluent in multiple languages including Punjabi, Hindi, Bengali, Haryanvi, Rajasthani, and Tamil.

In many of his films, Gurdas Maan has also worked in the music department as a playback singer and even as a composer, as was the case in the film Dushmani Di Agg (1990).

Besides films, Maan has recorded over 30 albums and released more than 300 songs in his career of less than 35 years. He is one of the most popular Punjabi folk and bhangra artists across India and the world. He has performed at numerous prestigious venues, including on two occasions at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

He continues to balance his singing, songwriting, and acting with considerable ease, claiming this is due to his equal passion for all these pursuits.
