Ghulam Mohammad Biography
Born : 1903
Death : 17 March 1968
Born in a family of artists, Mohammad began his musical training at a very young age. By the time he was six, he joined New Albert Theatrical Company. Over the years, Mohammad got more involved with the theatre and joined it full-time as a dance director. In 1924, he came to Bombay but landed himself the opportunity to play the tabla in Raja Bharthari, a production by Saroj Movietone Productions. In his initial years in Bombay, Mohammad assisted veteran music composers, Naushad and Anil Biswas. Twenty three years after his move to Bombay, Mohammad finally worked on his first independent film with the stunt film, Tiger Queen (1947). But it was Shohrab Modi's Mirza Ghalib (1954) that won Mohammed much deserved critical acclaim and the film went on to win the National Award for Best Music Direction in 1955.
Another classic that Gulam Moammad worked on was Kamal Amrohi's Pakeezah (1972). The film's shooting was perpetually stalled and it took over fourteen years in the making. While the film was still underway, Mohammad passed away in 1968. For the film, Naushad Ali helped finish the musical score of the album which went on to gain the status of a classic.
