Popular bhangra and Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi was born in Patna, Bihar on August 18th, 1967. A student of traditional Punjabi music and Punjabi devotional music, he was influenced by his parents who introduced him to music. He gave his first stage performance at the age of 13. In 1991, he formed his own group composed of his brothers, cousins and friends. After a few years of hard work in the year 1994, he went to Kazakhastan to participate in the annual Voice of Asia International Ethnic and Pop Music Contest. Mehndi represented India and stood second in the midst of hundreds of other contestants. In due course of time, Mehndi moved from classical music to pop, and in 1995 his first album Bolo Ta Ra Ra, sold almost half a million copies in four months and 20 million copies in all, making him the best-selling non-soundtrack album in Indian music history. The songs in the album were melodies based on those given to him by his mother. He received the Award for Voice of Asia International Ethnic and Pop Music Contest in 1994. The masses accepted his music with enthusiasm and his music became a rage.

In 1996, he received Channel V's Best Male Pop Singer Award for his famous track Dar Di Rab Rab. The song was a huge hit and he once again repeated his success in 1997, with the track Ho Jayegi Bale Bale. The next year, he composed the popular track ""Na Na Na Re"" for the film Mrityudaata (1997) and featured on the big screen with Amitabh Bachchan. His album song Tunak Tunak Tun (1998) is a worldwide phenomenon.

In addition to his videos and songs, his tours became a rage and he was signed by Coca Cola as their brand ambassador. He also had several hit international tours and became an international phenomenon. While his music was creating a rage, he was also recognised for his eclectic costumes, which were copied by his fans.

In 2003, Mehndi made a foray into playback singing and his title track for Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s hugely successful film Rang De Basanti (2006) became a massive hit.

Mehndi is accredited for creating a new genre of music called Rabbabi, which is a combination of Thumri, Sufi and rock.
