Ghosh started off as an actor on stage, and worked with various theatre groups including Ananda Bharati, Bharatiya Gananatya Sangha, Rupkar, and Anandolok. His desire to pursue a career in the theatre led to his estrangement from his father, and Ghosh left home to follow his dream. However, he kept up an alternate career outside of acting during his early years, and worked several jobs at a range of places like Grindlays and Co., Jadavpur University, Indian Airlines, and the Kolkata High Court, thus displaying a wide array of skills.
In 1948, Ghosh made a brief entry into the Bengali film industry with Bhuli Nai (1948), after he was offered a role by his neighbor Hemen Gupta, who happened to be the film’s director. Over a decade later, he returned to cinema with Sushil Ghosh’s Dilli Theke Kolkata (1961). Following this, Ghosh worked on a wide range of films with acclaimed Bengali directors. Some of his prominent works include Satyajit Ray’s Charulata (1964), Tapan Sinha’s Galpa Holeo Sotti (1966) and Atithi (1969), Bijoy Bose’s Arogya Niketan (1969), Niranjan Dey’s Sei Sur (1981), and Parimal Ghosh’s Mayer Ashirbad (1982). Ghosh’s last film was Rituparno Ghosh’s Hirer Angti (1992). He appeared in close to 50 films through the course of his career.
Ghosh was deeply interested in several other fields besides acting, film and theatre. He was keen on football, fitness and boxing, and in his younger days had even won the Bengal Boxing Championship for five years in a row. He was an ardent activist for child rights, and worked with a child welfare group called Jatiyo Sangho.
Ghosh passed away on June 3, 1992.
