Anu Malik

Anwar Sardaar Malik, who goes famously by Anu malik, is one of the most prominent Indian music directors. He was born on 2 November, 1960 to veteran music director Sardar Malik.

Anu Malik made his debut with the film Hunterwali (1977). The musical scores in this film were much appreciated by the masses and critics. After this initial success, he composed the music for several popular films including Sohni Mahiwal (1984), Mard (1985), Ganga Jamuna Saraswati (1988) and Jeete Hain Shaan Se (1987).

1993 was a significant year for Anu Malik as he produced several hit songs and soundtracks. His music for Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994) and Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995) became extremely popular. Later, he received huge commercial success for his music in the films Virasat (1997) and Border (1997).

He displayed his excellent skills further in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Kareeb (1998) and Mahesh Bhatt’s Duplicate (1998), despite the lack of recognition he got for it, they proved to be testament to his talent.

He kept producing hit sound-tracks for many popular films including Andaleeb Sultanpuri’s Jaanam Samjha Karo (1999), Abbas-Mustan’s Baadshah (1999), Mansoor Khan’s Josh (2000), J P Dutta’s Refugee (2000), Raj Kanwar’s Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega (2000) and Khalid Mohammed’s Fiza (2000). Of these, Refugee (2000) won him the prestigious National Film Award for the Best Music Direction.

In 2001, he managed the rare feat of having 5 of his sound-tracks among the top 20 film albums of the year which were Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai (2001), Aks (2001), Ajnabee (2001), Yaadein (2001) and Asoka (2001). His guest composition “Ishq Kameena” for Shakti (2002) was one of the most popular songs of the year.

In 2003 again, Malik composed popular scores for Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003), Munna Bhai M.B.B.S (2003) and Ishq Vishq (2003). His music for LOC Kargil (2003) was appreciated by critics and his winning streak continued in 2004 with films like Main Hoon Naa (2004), Fida (2004) and Murder (2004), whose music topped the charts.

Later in 2004, Malik was also the guest composer for the film Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004) and the score “Jeene Ke Hain Char Din” was also a chartbuster.

Malik proved to make a fine team with the singer Alisha Chinai and together they delivered several major hits which included ‘Sexy Sexy’ from Khuddar (1994) and ‘Ruk Ruk Ruk’ from Vijaypath (1994), ‘Chot Dil Pe Lagi’ from Ishq Vishk (2003) and the songs from Love Story 2050 (2005). Anu Malik’s music has set a benchmark for other music composers in the industry with films like Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995), Border (1997), Virasat (1997), China Gate (1998), Fiza (2000), Filhaal (2002). Baazigar (1993) and Main Hoon Na (2005) won him the Filmfare Award for the Best Music Director.

For his absolute versatility, determination and confidence, Malik is unparalleled in the film industry. He recently worked on Welcome Back (2015) and Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015). He is also famously one of the main judges on the music reality show Indian Idol for all its seasons so far.
