Ali Asgar is well known name in Indian stand-up comedy, and is also an actor. He was born on July 25, 1966. As a child, he began acting when he was in the 10th grade, but did not pursue it as a full-time career until much later, completing his undergraduate studies in Political Science followed by a course in Hotel Management. Asgar then considered moving to the US for a job at a hotel, but due to the commitment being a five-year long one, and to interesting offers that came to him from the entertainment industry, he decided to stay on in India and take up these offers.

Though Asgar began acting for television in the mid-1980s, he set it aside as a young adult to focus on his studies, and claims it was a role that he took up in 1997 with the Doordarshan serial Itihaas (1997 – 1998) that helped him develop as an actor. Following this period of growth, Asgar got his big break with Ekta and Shobha Kapoor’s Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii (2000 – 2008) where he played the role of Kamal, the character he became most recognized for.

His television career is a diverse one, and besides acting in soap operas he has appeared in numerous comedy shows including Comedy Circus – Season 1 (2007), a competition which Asgar ended up winning. He currently plays a regular role on the sketch comedy show Comedy Nights with Kapil (2013 – present). In addition to this, Asgar has participated in numerous reality shows including Zara Nachke Dikha – Season 1 (2008), a dance competition where he was the captain of the boys’ team.

Asgar has acted in supporting roles in over thirty films including Raaz (2002), Aetbaar (2004), Partner (2007) and, Tees Maar Khan (2010). Though Asgar has in the past turned down roles in films, such as Sajid NadiadWala’s action thriller Kick (2014), in order to fulfil his obligations on television, he has spoken about his desire to create a working schedule that allows him time to work in both media. “Serials have given me recognition. But I don't want to restrict myself to the tube. I am lured by the big screen.”
