Abhishek Chaubey Biography

Born : 30 March 1977, in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh

Abhishek Chaubey is a critically acclaimed screenwriter and film director. He was born in Faizabad on 30 March, 1977 and finished his schooling from Jamshedpur, Patna and Ranchi in 1993. He then completed his graduation in English Literature from the Hindu College of Delhi University. It was after this that he shifted to Mumbai and joined a course in Film and Television Production at the Xavier Institute of Communications. Before making his directorial debut, Chaubey worked as an associate director and co-writer to Vishal Bharadwaj for many years and scripted many of his films including The Blue Umbrella (2005), Kaminey (2009) and Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola (2012). One of his most powerful scripts was Omkara (2006) based on Shakespeare's acclaimed play Othello, which earned him several award nominations.

Abhishek then made his directorial debut with Ishqiya (2010), The unusual story features two small time criminals, portrayed by Arshad Warsi and Naseeruddin Shah, who are trying to escape from the clutches of their boss. They meet a widow, played by Vidya Balan, who offers them shelter but also has plans of her own. The film was appreciated by the masses as well as the critics. His recent film was the sequel to the same called Dedh Ishiya (2014) which also received much critical appreciation and was a box office success. The sequel retained many of the themes of the previous film but gave it a new setting and complexity.

His methodology as a director has proven to be a unique challenge to the mainstream filmmakers. Udta Punjab (2016) is his latest release, a film that explores drug use among the youth of Punjab.
