Top 5 pop songs from Shaan you've forgotten about — Birthday special

by   Shriram Iyengar

Shantanu Mukherjee, or Shaan as we know him, made his entry into Hindi cinema in 2000. Yet, the singer was a part of the 90s pop brigade who lit up television screens for the Indian Mtv generation. As the singer turns 43 today (30 September), we celebrate the sometimes wacky, but mostly fun pop songs that made him a star. Happy birthday Shaan!

1 'Loveology'

Forgive the weird video, it was the 90s. It was this brilliant track that established Shaan as a star. Accompanied on vocals by his sister, Sagarika, the singer was every bit the youth icon with his long hair, jeans and the glasses. It would propel him into the expanding galaxy of pop stars in the 90s.

2 'Tanha Dil'

His second album was the big break that Shaan was looking for. Written and composed by the musician, it was a nostalgic ode to the rebellious teen years. For many, it continues to be the perfect time machine to roll back the years and live the early millenium again.

3 'One Love'

If you thought our pop phenomenon was just a 'desi' one, it was not. For Rakht (2004), Shaan created this, official, remake of Blue's single, 'One Love'. It proved to be one of the biggest chartbusters of the year.

4 'Hum Bewafa' (Instant Karma)

His partnership with another popstar, Biddu, was one of the early signs of Shaan's talent. Together for the album 'Instant Karma', they produced some stellar tracks that were a hallmark of the rising interest in the spread of a new genre of music called 'remixes'.

5 'Dil Kya Kare' (Instant Karma)

As a long time fan of Kishore Kumar, Shaan has recreated some of his idol's biggest hits. This one was a remix of the magical song from Julie (1975). Shaan's voice reminds you of the youthfulness and charm which has made him the rightful heir to his idol's throne.
