Why Shah Rukh Khan is the king of Karva Chauth

by   Keyur Seta

Shah Rukh Khan is considered the king of 'Bollywood' and the king of Romance. But if you take a closer look at his career, you would realise that he is the king of Karva Chauth too. Confused? Well, the actor features in the most number of Karva Chauth scenes in Hindi cinema. Let’s revisit each.

1 Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

If there is one film that singlehandedly popularised Karva Chauth in India, it’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. But more than the traditional side, the scene is famous for Kajol’s funny act of drinking water from Shah Rukh Khan’s hand. Her manner of winking had us in splits.

2 Yes Boss (1997)

This film isn’t remembered much for its Karva Chauth sequence. In the story of an employee and his boss falling for the same girl, the scene formed an important part. Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla had to fake the festival to justify their fake marriage.

3 Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001)

Unlike in the previous two films, there is no pretense in this sequence. This one is not only Shah Rukh Khan’s, but Hindi cinema’s most sanskaari Karva Chauth. That’s not all. Apart from Khan and Kajol, a large group of married couples are seen taking part, making it a mass Karva Chauth moment.

4 Ra.One (2011)

Now, this one came as a surprise. Most of us might believe that Karva Chauth does not have a place in a superhero film like Ra.One. But director Anubhav Sinha had other ideas because, after all, anything can happen in a Hindi potboiler. This is the first and maybe last instance of a superhero being involved in Karva Chauth.
