Four movies that prove Sonam Kapoor is the quintessential girl next door on screen

by   Aishwarya Shridhar

Sonam Kapoor, who made her debut in Saawariya (2007), is known for being straightforward, outspoken and a fashionista. When it comes to engaging with fans, no one does it as well as Sonam! An active social media presence and a new app for all her fans to keep in touch with her makes her incredibly well-loved. The characters she portrays in her films are also often relatable and with her girl-next-door charm. On her 31st birthday, we take a look at some of the roles that have managed to connect with the audience.

1 Delhi-6 (2009)

In Delhi-6, Sonam Kapoor plays the role of Bittu, a girl who has grown up in a traditional, middle-class household but has bigger dreams. She wishes to escape the confines of Old Delhi and pursue a career in singing by bagging an audition with Indian Idol. Kapoor perfectly portrays the coexistence of a rebellious streak with the pretence of compliance amongst her family, a story of many living in India could relate to!

2 I Hate Luv Storys (2010)

This hit film saw Sonam Kapoor playing the role of Simran, a normal girl who constantly dreams of Bollywood romances. One can't deny that this is a fantasy many share! Towards the end, we see her character grow and realise that there is more to love than a fairy-tale setup, a much needed lesson.

3 Khoobsurat (2014)

Milli, the bubbly and down to earth physiotherapist, portrayed by Sonam Kapoor is a commendable performance by the actor. When she finds herself in the royal household in order to help the patriach in his recovery, she teaches the uptight family a few lessons about living life to the fullest. Her endearing clumsiness and cheery ways gives socially awkward girls all over the world some hope.

4 Neerja (2016)

One of Sonam Kapoor's most critically acclaimed performances, her portrayal as the braveheart Neerja, a flight attendant who sacrificed her life in order to save the passengers on her flight, certainly moved everyone. However, her performance goes beyond that, as she skillfully shows another side to Neerja, that of a normal girl who loves her family, who survived an abusive relationship with a husband, and who has an unparalleled zest for life.
