7 medical miracles from Hindi cinema to blow your mind

by   Shriram Iyengar

From ludicrous villains to action sequences that would make Newton rip his theory of gravity to shreds, Bollywood has constantly defied science. But if you thought you had seen it all, you haven't. On Doctor's Day, here is a look at 7 miracles in Hindi cinema that are straight out of another dimension.

1 Amar Akbar Anthony (1977)

Everyone knows this scene. The three brothers are donating blood to their long-lost mother after she has had an accident. That would be normal. Where it scales Bollywood peaks is the anti-gravity flow of blood from the patients to the bottle hanging above them. And checks for compatibility be damned. This is 'maa ka khoon'!

2 Clerk (1989)

This, literally, is the baap of all medical miracles. A heart attack cured by song! Ashok Kumar's character is at death's door, having suffered a massive attack.Just when you think it is time for the famous 'dawa ki nahi, dua ki zarurat hai' line, Manoj Kumar's character steps in. The solution? A patriotic song on a transistor that will send blood pumping back into the old man's damaged heart. Cardiac specialists around the world, take note.

3 Hello Brother (1999)

This one will make you go 'Oh brother'! Arbaaz Khan made his debut as leading man with this quixotic film in which he receives a heart transplant from an accident victim, Salman Khan. Et voila! He can see Salman Khan's ghost wandering around (without a heart, we might add) playing pranks on him. Along the way, he also falls in love with Salman Khan's girl and takes revenge on the villain. Talk of having a big heart!

4 3 Idiots (2009)

Aamir Khan is intelligent. Ask him and he would tell you that. But there is intelligence, and then there is genius. In 3 Idiots, Khan's character Rancho finds himself in the unlikely position of playing midwife to his lover's sister. If that is not weird enough, Rancho does it all with a vacuum cleaner. But the real miracle is to follow. When the child is stillborn, all it takes is a chorus of the incorrectly pronounced chant of 'All Izz Well' to bring it back to life! Well, we always knew Mr Khan had a way with words.

5 Rowdy Rathore (2012)

Talking of action heroes, Akshay Kumar takes the lead. A tumour in the brain can make bashing goons a little more difficult than usual. But just when the Khiladi looks like he might give in to the tumour, the skies open up to send down a refreshing shower. Cue for more goon bashing! If only such a shower were reality, Mondays would be so much better.

6 Diya Aur Toofan (1995)

What happens when even miracles cannot save your hero from death? Well, you simply take his brain out and store it in a broken oven with some ice cubes. Later, you plug it into any body that you find. In Diya Aur Toofan Mithun Chakraborty's brain finds itself in Madhoo's body, with its memory intact! Yo Christopher Nolan, you watching?

7 Dil Ne Jise Apna Kahaa (2004)

Salman Khan should have done DIlwale considering the number of times he features in films with heart donations. In Dil Ne Jise Apne Kahaa, Khan's wife, played by Preity Zinta, donates her heart just before her death. Bhumika Chawla is the lucky recipient who gets the heart with all its emotional complications. Unable to bear the shocking gift of such a loving heart, she goes into a coma. Enter Bhaijaan, who revives her by simply crying in front of her. How can a heart hold memories and emotions, you may ask. But as Khan said in another movie, 'Main dil me aata hun, samajh me nahi!' Bhai rocks!
