Bollywood at the grand piano

by   Shriram Iyengar

The grand piano is a prop for grand and somber occasions in Bollywood. It is the companion to a hero's tragic confession or a heroine's flirtatious proposition. From Dilip Kumar to Shah Rukh Khan, heroes have turned to this trusty ivory companion to express their feelings. Take a look at some of the beautiful songs sung at the grand piano.

1 Chalo ek baar phir se – Gumrah

A rejected lover sings at the home of his love's new husband. Sahir Ludhianvi penned these verses for himself, but Ravi translated them on screen beautifully with this serene composition. Sunil Dutt in a tuxedo, Mala Sinha looking flustered and an ever cavalier Ashok Kumar add to the magic of the song that earned Mahendra Kapoor a Filmfare award.

2 Falsafaa pyaar ka tum kya jaano – Duniya

Dev Anand in a smooth white jacket serenades a miffed Vyjayanthimala. Hasrat Jaipuri penned the lyrics for this wonderful ghazal by Shankar Jaikishan. One of the rare Dev Anand-Shankar Jaikishan combinations, but just as beautiful.

3 Kisi patthar ki murat se mohabbat ka iraada hai  - Hamraaz

If there was a piano, Sunil Dutt could not be far away. He pops up again in this wonderful song set at the instrument. Another composition by Ravi, the song remains a nostalgic throwback to a different era.

4  Chehre pe khushi cha jaati hai – Waqt

For a change, we have Sadhna at the piano serenading the party. The rest of the usual suspects follow in this composition by Ravi, penned by Sahir Ludhianvi. Oh yeah! And there's Sunil Dutt, the hero to whom the song is dedicated, walking in at the beginning of the song.

5 Khwab ho tum ya koi haqeeqat –  Teen Deviyan

In one beautiful song, SD Burman captures the perfect ode to the muse. Dev Anand is at his debonair best as he serenades his three muses – Simi and Kalpana. Where other men would've stuttered on facing such attention, Dev Anand exudes a languorous charm.

6 Pyar Diwana Hota Hai – Kati Patang

5 down and time for the king of romance to take to the piano. Rajesh Khanna charmed his way through female hearts with this melancholic tune. RD Burman's wonderful composition adds to the lazy elegance of the setting, taking attention away from the mariachi band standing beside the piano.

7 Dil ke jharokhe me tujh ko bithakar – Brahmachari

The grace of the piano turns the wild rebel Shammi Kapoor into a sober, melancholic poet. Throw in the revolving circular stage and it makes for a fabulous Bollywood piano song. And boy, does Mohd. Rafi sing it!

8 Tum bin jaoon kahaan – Pyar ka Mausam

Melancholy and longing seem to go hand in hand with the grand piano in Bollywood. We return to it again in this haunting number, picturised on a tuxedoed Shashi Kapoor. Women around the world would envy Asha Parekh!

9 Aaj ki raat mere dil ki salaami le le – Ram Aur Shyam

Dilip Kumar,a hindustani classical afficianado, does a fabulous job at the piano in this number. Serenading a miffed Waheeda Rehman, Dilipsaab proves why he was called by Satyajit Ray as 'The Ultimate Method Actor'.

10 Aap ke  haseen rukh pe – Bahaarein Phir Bhi Aayengi

A grand piano in the centre of the room? Check. Suit? Check. A handsome man surrounded by two gorgeous ladies? Check. Mohammed Rafi's voice adds a touch of romance to the Greek god looks of Dharmendra. One of his early movies, it does full justice to the earthly charm of Dharmendra.

11 Patthar ke Sanam tujhe hamne – Patthar Ke Sanam

Returning to the sad piano is an even sadder Manoj Kumar. The man who would become the image of 'Bharat' for generations to come does a wonderful job at the ivories. The gorgeousness of Mumtaz and Waheeda Rehman make it all the more difficult for the pious Kumar.

12 Tu kahe agar – Andaz

Dilip Kumar. Nargis. Raj Kapoor. Mehboob Khan's Andaz had three of the most talented actors of the generation in one film. This song 'Tu kahe agar' becomes an important plot moment, for it is here that Dilip Kumar confesses his love to a completely clueless Nargis through a song. Majrooh Sultanpuri's lyrics defined the sad innocence of one-sided love.

13 Bohot pyar karte hain – Saajan

A Bollywood love triangle is never complete unless a piano is played. In Saajan, Madhuri takes to a beautiful fog covered ivory piano and sings. We can't make up our minds on who is more beautiful – Madhuri or the piano.

14 Piyu bole – Parineeta

Learning to play the piano certainly helps to get in the lady's book. In 'Parineeta', Saif Ali Khan takes the classy route of pretending to get Vidya Balan to help him write a song while wooing her all the same. Well played, Chote Nawab!

15 Tum apna ranj-o-gham – Shagoon

'Shagoon' has one of the rare songs where the heroine, or, at least, one of them, croons to a sullen leading man. In the voice of Jagjit Kaur, Sahir Ludhianvi's lyrics acquires a playful serenity. But watch out for a smouldering Kamaljeet, a wonderful but underrated actor.

16 Dheere dheere machal ae dil e beqarar  - Anupama

A beautiful, docile number with an angelic Surekha Pandit at the keys. Sung by Lata Mangeshkar, this song proved to be a popular hit with fans. Hemant Kumar's composition stands tall amid all the beautiful cinematography of the scene.

17 Agar sun le to ek nagma - Ek Raaz

Here's one song where the actor is actually playing the piano. Kishore Kumar takes up the role of the heartbroken lover singing at his heroine's engagement. A highly underrated song by a brilliant music director, Chitragupt, it also showcases the multi-talented musical genius of Kishore Kumar.

18 Hamein aur jeene ki – Agar Tum Na Hote

The piano is ridiculously small in size, but when has size ever mattered in Bollywood. Rajesh Khanna takes to it with some questionable style as he serenades Rekha. Though the film had no other memorable tracks, RD Burman ensured its title track would rule airwaves and the hearts of nostalgic lovers for decades to come.

19 Ruk ja O dil deewane - DDLJ

The piano is not always a source of sombre melancholy. Cue the irrepressible Shah Rukh Khan going full Beethoven on the piano before he turns on the charm faucet. No one cares that he doesn't play the piano well. The song remains a party hit and is a lesson in flirting by King Khan.
