The cricketing 11 in Bollywood

by   Shriram Iyengar

In India, two professions are celebrated unlike any other - cricket and films. It is only natural that these two starry vocations entwine occasionally. Though no film star has managed to make it to the Indian cricket team, but many of our top cricketers have appeared in films. Here's a list of cricketers who scored big in films.

1 Kapil Dev

Arguably India's greatest all-rounder, Kapil Dev turned to films when he ended his career in cricket. Having been a recognised face with his brand endorsements, Kapil did manage quite a run on the silver screen. He appeared in the cult hit 'Iqbal' and alongside stars Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar in 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi'.

2 Sunil Gavaskar

The 'Little Master' had made his class known on the pitch since his debut in 1970. In the late 80s, the greatest batsman in the world took to the screen for a second innings. He played the lead in a Marathi film 'Savali Premachi', and also made an acting appearance alongside Naseeruddin Shah in the 1988 comedy 'Malamaal'.

3 Sandeep Patil

Sandeep Patil had more than just stylish batting that earned him massive female attention. With his tall stature and lush beard, the Bombay batsman was considered one of the most handsome cricketers of his time. No wonder, he managed to find a leading role in Bollywood opposite Poonam Dhillon in 'Kabhi Ajnabi The'.

4 Syed Kirmani

India's most famous gloveman before MS Dhoni came along, Syed Kirmani was known for his antics and a very recognisable dome. It should be no surprise then that the genial Hyderabadi also played a villain in 'Kabhi Ajnabi The', which had his teammate Sandeep Patil in the lead.

5 Navjot Singh Sidhu

Raconteur, poet, host, cricketer. Navjot Singh Sidhu is a man of many talents. He added one more feather to his cap by making a special appearance in Salman Khan-Akshay Kumar starrer 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi'.

6 Harbhajan Singh

Bhajji, as he is fondly called, remains one of the most talented off spinners of the world. His buoyant personality made him a natural in front of the camera. He made an appearance in 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' before going on to act in several Punjabi films like 'Second Hand Husband' and 'Bhaji Problems'.

7 Ajay Jadeja

The most successful cricketer on screen, Ajay Jadeja had his looks going for him when he started a career in cinema. He began with supporting roles with Suniel Shetty in 'Khel', before moving on to play a lead role in 'Pal Pal Dil Ke Ssaat' opposite Mahie Gill

8 Salil Ankola

Unlike the others, Salil Ankola had a more successful career off the pitch than on it. The former Bombay allrounder only played 1 test match and 20 one-day internationals before retiring, at the age of 28. Since then, he has acted in films like 'Kurukshetra', 'Churaa Liya Hai Tumne' and Pitaah.

9 Yograj Singh

The father of India's current favourite all rounder, Yograj Singh made a name for himself in Punjabi films immediately after his short career in cricket. But his most memorable performance came in the Milkha Singh biopic, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. He returned to the screen again with Akshay Kumar last year in 'Singh is Bliing'.

10 Salim Durrani

Before MSD and the helicopter shot, there was a Salim Durrani. Old timers revel in narrating tales of how Durrani would dispatch bowlers to the boundary on public demand. Once his spectacular career had ended, he made a surprise turn by acting in the film 'Charitra' opposite the then heartthrob, Parveen Babi.

11 Vinod Kambli

Ramakant Achrekar, Sachin Tendulkar's great coach, once called Vinod Kambli the more talented of the two prodigies. Yet Kambli's career floundered and crashed. He turned to acting in films like 'Annarth' and 'Pal Pal Dil Ke Ssaat' alongside his former teammate, Ajay Jadeja. Both films bombed like his career.
