From Mother India to Kai Po Che: Bollywood's natural disasters

From earthquakes to floods, these landmark films taught us how to deal with any obstacle thrown our way by Mother Nature

1 Mother India (1957)

The first Hindi film to represent India at the Oscars, Mehboob Khan's crowning achievement Mother India put its heroine under trial as she tries to survive the harsh conditions of the family farm. As the long-suffering Radha, Nargis took on the role of her lifetime to portray the resilient wife and mother who shoulders the responsibilities for her family, when her husband deserts her. Mother India goes up against Mother Nature when a storm threatens to destroy their village, but Radha asks her fellow villagers not to abandon hope and requests them to stay and rebuild.

2 Waqt (1965)

The multi-starrer Waqt, directed by Yash Chopra, was the ultimate lost and found feature in Hindi cinema. Balraj Sahni and Achala Sachdev played a happily married couple with three young sons. Lala Kedarnath believes he has everything in life, when suddenly,  one night an earthquake hits the city, destroying his house and family in the progress. The family is fragmented and separated for decades, until a court case involving his eldest son, reunites the whole family back again. The super-hit film won director Chopra his first Filmfare trophy for Best Director.

3 Tum Mile (2009)

A love story set against the backdrops of the Mumbai floods that held the city ransom in July 2005, Tum Mile starred Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan as Akshay and Sanjana. They are now two estranged lovers recalling their past love, they come together again in the city submerged under water. As they see the worsening situation around them, Akshay and Sanjana arrive at the realization that they were meant to be together. Directed by Kunal Deshmukh, the film featured actual footage from floods. Tum Mile, however, failed to connect with audiences and sank at the box office.

4 OMG Oh My God! (2012)

Director Umesh Shukla adapted his bestselling Gujarati play, Kanji Virudh Kanji to the big screen with Paresh Rawal essaying the role of Kanji Lalji Mehta. Kanji earns his living selling idols of Hindu deities and has no qualms about cheating his customers. One day, an earthquake strikes the city, reducing his only his shop to rubble. When the insurance company denies his claim owing to an 'act of God', Kanji decides to take God to court to get his money. As Kanji fights a seemingly impossible battle, he learns more about himself and the religion he's going up against. Producer Akshay Kumar appeared opposite Rawal as Lord Krishna in this super-hit stage adaptation.

5 Kai Po Che (2013)

Abhishek Kapoor's next after Rock On!! (2008), Kai Po Che was an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life. Taking place in Ahmedabad, the lead characters, Ishaan, Omkar and Govind, face many hurdles in the friendship. From the trials of setting up shop to the real-life 2001 earthquake which devastated the state of Gujarat, the three friends try to survive the hardships in their lives. But they are finally unable to overcome the communal riots that sweep the state and their lives are entangled firmly, with tragic results. The critically-acclaimed film was also the film debut of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
