PS – 1 trailer: Mani Ratnam’s period drama sets up an epic saga of rule, grandeur and intrigue

Starring Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, the first film in the series has been adapted from Kalki’s classic Tamil novel Ponniyin Selvan.

The trailer of Mani Ratnam’s highly anticipated magnum opus PS - 1 (2022) has set up an epic period drama where grandeur, scheming, and the quest of power, all comes to a head.

The film, which is due to be released in five languages later this month, had a grand trailer event in Chennai, Tamil Nadu on 6 September where former Ratnam stars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan launched the saga.

Narrated by Anil Kapoor for the Hindi version of the trailer, the veteran actor begins by telling the tale set over a thousand years ago of the Chola dynasty and its inner power struggles.

The long trailer, at nearly three-and-a-half minutes, takes its time in introducing the key players of the saga, including Vikram as Aditya Karikalan, Jayam Ravi as Arunmozhi Varman, Karthi as Vanthiyathevan, Trisha as Kundavai and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Nandini.

With a comet appearing in the sky, it was destined that the royal blood of someone from the Chola must be sacrificed. Unrest soon grew within the family.

Aditya sends Karthi’s Vanthiyathevan, his trusted friend, on a secret personal mission to gain information of a conspiracy. Several characters are keen to fight for their right to the throne.

Trisha’s Kundavai asks Vanthiyathevan to bring Arunmozhi from Lanka for her, while Nandini conspires that the two men do not meet. It remains to be seen who actually succeeds.

The period drama also stars Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman and Radhakrishnan Parthiban.

Jointly produced by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions, PS -1 features music composed by AR Rahman.

The technical team also comprises of a number of award winners from Ravi Varman as cinematographer, Sreekar Prasad as editor, to Eka Lakhani with costumes. Thota Tharani has been roped in for production design, while Jeyamohan has penned the dialogues. Ratnam has co-written the screenplay with actor and screenwriter, Kumaravel.

The feature film is due to be released worldwide in theatres on 30 September in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.
