The drama Goodbye (2022) follows a grieving Bhalla family that pulls itself together after the death of the matriarch Gayatri, played by Neena Gupta. The trailer opens with a domestic squabble between father and daughter, played by Amitabh Bachchan and south star Rashmika Mandanna, who makes her Hindi debut with the film.
The mother tries to play peacemaker but does not succeed. Suddenly, Mandanna’s character finds her mother has died, despite her father trying to reach her when she was injured.
Goodbye then looks at the rituals and traditions that have be observed after death, with two generations clashing on what the wishes of the deceased would have been. Pavail Gulati and Shivin Narang play Mandanna’s siblings who also arrive after the death of their mother.
Elli Avram plays Gulati’s partner, while Sunil Grover plays a spiritual man they encounter on their way to put Gayatri to rest.
The tone of the film veers from comedy to drama; looking at how the family heals and bonds, discovering the importance of family, as they come together to celebrate life and togetherness.
While the trailer shows more of their discord, the feature will likely show how they solve their disagreements. Mandanna’s character has a strong emotional journey; the actress also seems to struggle a bit with her Hindi dialogues.
Produced by Ektaa R Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures, in association with writer-director Vikas Bahl’s Good Co., GoodBye is due to be released theatrically on 7 October.
