The first song ‘Gaya Gaya Gaya’ from R Balki’s Chup (2022) shows Shreya Dhanwanthary’s character admitting that she would only believe herself in love when she finds her partner walking towards her in slow motion.
The dreamy song composed by Amit Trivedi shows Dhanwanthary and Dulquer Salmaan’s characters falling for each other as they roam around Mumbai on a cycle. There are plenty of cinematic references in the song as the couple has those cliqued moments in the rain that we’ve seen before in Hindi films.
Additionally, they pass colourful murals of Hindi stars Rishi Kapoor, Helen, Waheeda Rahman, Dharmendra and Irrfan Khan in the city, and scenes of filmmaker Guru Dutt’s films are intercut with similar poses of the couple’s interactions.
However, along with this budding romance, there are scenes in black and white featuring Sunny Deol’s detective as he investigates the serial killer targeting film critics by carving stars into their foreheads.
In ‘Gaya Gaya Gaya’ Kirkire's lyrics speak of an inevitable romance between shared glances and touches. While the composition and vocals by Rupali Moghe and Shashwat Singh match the romantic mood of the duet, there is an undercurrent of darkness that lurks in the lyrics, hinting at a poison within.
Trivedi’s composition is light and moody, while Moghe and Singh’s rendition suit and match well in the romantic track.
With a screenplay by Balki, former critic Raja Sen and Rish Virmani, Chup also stars Pooja Bhatt and Saranya Ponvanna. The thriller is due to be released in theatres on 23 September.
