The Anubhav Sinha film sheds light on the issue of the alienation of the Northeast.

Ayushmann Khurrana in Anek

Anubhav Sinha and Ayushmann Khurrana tackled the issue of casteism in their last outing together Article 15 (2019). The two are back once again with Anek, which deals with the issue of the alienation of the Northeast region.

The film revolves around an undercover cop, played by Khurrana, who is stationed in the Northeast. He is witness to the instability and militancy in corner of the country. Apart from taking part in the covert operations, he is also deeply affected by the decades-long conflict between militant groups and the government of India.

Anek also brings to light the blatant racism that people of the Northeast face on a regular basis. The scene where Khurrana’s character argues with another officer about the division among Indians is the highlight of the trailer.

Anek easily brings to mind Article 15, in terms of the story of the oppressed, the portrayal of reality and the colour grading. But Anek surely has an identity of its own as the subject is not only different from the 2019 movie but also much more complicated. The film also looks impressive in terms of its technicalities.

Khurrana’s presence and seriousness are visible from the trailer itself. The actors playing locals and Manoj Pahwa, one of Sinha’s favourites, also impress.

Produced by Benaras Media Works and T-Series and distributed by AA Films, Anek will be released in theatres on 27 May.
