On Maharashtra Day (1 May), filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar announced Veer Daudale Saat, which is based on the story of Prataprao Gujar.
Now, filmmaker Deepak Kadam has announced another film on the same subject titled Sarnobat.
The makers have released a motion poster for the film which indicates that this will be yet another film based on Maratha history. The makers haven't revealed the cast yet.
The film is set in 1674, just months before Shivaji is set to become the first Maratha king and take the title Chhatrapati. He writes a critical letter to his military commander Prataprao after the Adilshahi general Bahlol Khan starts attacking his territories. Prataprao had let Bahlol Khan go earlier after the latter had made a promise not to attack Maratha territories again.
This fills Prataprao with guilt and he sets off to battle Bahlol Khan’s troops alone as he doesn’t want other soldiers to suffer for his misjudgement. But he is joined by six other Maratha warriors in his mission.
Legendary Marathi poet VV Shirwadkar aka Kusumagraj wrote a poem on these events titled ‘Vedaat Marathe Veer Daudale Saat'. Since then, the incident has been known by this name.
Speaking of his film, director Kadam said, “Sarnobat means Prataprao Gujar. We have been hearing the poem ‘Myanatun Usale Talwarichi Paat, Vedaat Marathe Veer Daudale Saat’ since childhood. The film will look at who these seven Marathas were and what happened with them. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had created an army of such people who were ready to sacrifice their lives for the sake of Swarajya. One can just imagine their dedication and love for Swarajya. One such person who was obsessed with Swarajya was Prataprao Gujar.”
Sarnobat is backed by Jain Film Production.
