The state of Indian media is explored in the upcoming fictional Zee5 series The Broken News (2022), which is an adaptation of the British series Press (2018).
Jaideep Ahlawat plays the powerful anchor Dipankar Sanyal from Josh 24/7 who controls the news on his channel. The news is boring, he states. So he opts to make stories. His rivals Amina Qureshi (Sonali Bendre) from Awaaz Bharti and Radha Bhargava (Shriya Pilgaonkar) are his opposites, or so it seems.
The trailer indicates that Radha switches sides and joins Sanyal after a rift with Amina. Will it change the nature of the straightforward channel or will she join Sanyal in twisting the news?
The series looks at how news has been transformed into an entertainment programme over time, with channels controlling what the public sees and hears. It also sets up an intriguing clash of diverse anchoring styles with the characters of Sanyal and Qureshi.
Bendre, who hasn’t acted in films in nearly two decades, makes her OTT debut with this role. The ensemble cast also comprises Indraneil Sengupta as Pankaj Awasthi, Faisal Rashid as Kamal Wadia, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya as Juhi Shergill, Kiran Kumar as Radhe Shyam Bansal and Taaruk Raina as Anuj Saxena.
Directed by Vinay Waikul, The Broken News will be premiered on Zee5 on 10 June in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
