News about Paresh Rawal starring in Ananth Narayan Mahadevan’s directorial venture based on a Satyajit Ray short story came out in 2018. The film has now been officially announced as a production venture of Jio Studios in association with Purpose Entertainment and Quest Films.
The film is titled The Storyteller and will see the adaptation of Ray’s short story Golpo Bolo Tarini Khuro. It also stars Adil Hussain, Revathi and Tannishtha Chatterjee. The story is based on the character penned by Ray called Tarini Khuro.
A statement from the makers said, 'In this story about originality versus plagiarism, Ray was raising a larger question: what is more important – the story or the storyteller?'
Jio Studios has been in the eye of a storm after an independent filmmaker accused it of trying to block his film's release. The production house has denied the charge.
The Storyteller was announced in the year of Ray’s brrth centenary. Filmmaker Ananth Mahadevan said, “As part of the celebrations around the life and work of the legend, we are very happy and honoured to share our own humble homage to the master storyteller. The Storyteller, a timeless fable, explores the mindset of people who exploit and are exploited. Ray’s subtle treatment of the subject makes one smile at what is, in fact, a revenge story. An amalgamation of wit, drama, and even suspense, the film is an attempt to bring Ray to a generation that has only heard about him or been occasionally exposed to his collection.”
The makers said The Storyteller will be released soon.
Correction, 25 May: The earlier headline for this report suggested Jio Studios joined the project recently. The company has clarified that it has been associated with the film from the beginning and only the announcement was made now.
