Nipun Dharmadhikari’s film Me Vasantrao (2022) completed 50 days in theatres on 19 May.
The film is a musical biopic of renowned classical vocalist Vasantrao Deshpande.
Deshpande's grandson, classical singer Rahul Deshpande, portrayed Vasantrao in the movie.
Produced by Jio Studios, the film was released in cinemas in time for Gudi Padwa, the Maharashtrian new year, on 1 April. It received glowing reviews from critics and positive feedback from audiences.
Me Vasantrao is still running at a few shows in cities like Mumbai and Pune.
Speaking about the film’s feat, Rahul Deshpande said in a statement, “Our film Me Vasantrao was released in theatres on the festive occasion of Gudi Padwa. From that day till today, the love it has received from the audience has been the reason why it has reached this landmark. We still get reactions from the audience on this film. This makes us feel overwhelmed.”
He added, “I was able to play the lead role in Me Vasantrao because of some able support from the film’s team, my family and relatives. Hence, the credit for the film’s success goes to all of us.”
The movie saw Pushkaraj Chirputkar as the legendary Purushottam Laxman Deshpande aka PL Deshpande. It also starred Anita Date, Kaumudi Walokar and Amey Wagh.
