Ranveer Singh's social comedy Jayeshbhai Jordaar (2022) had a poor opening yesterday. The film, which has been helmed by Divyang Thakkar, only managed to earn Rs3 crore nett, according to trade website BoxOfficeIndia.com.

Jayeshbhai Jordaar review: Ranveer Singh, Jia Vaidya shine in this outdated and predictable social comedy

Jayeshbhai Jordaar's first-day collection is in the same ballpark as the recent Hindi releases Runway 34 (2022) and Jersey (2022). The film, which also stars Shalini Pandey and Boman Irani, opened to mixed reviews with little buzz. Its trailer and other promotional material did not receive an overwhelmingly positive response.

Interestingly, Jayeshbhai Jordaar's first-day figure is lower than that of Ranveer Singh's sports drama 83 (2021), which was released when the Omicron variant of the coronavirus was on the rise last December.

According to sources, Jayeshbhai Jordaar was made on a budget of Rs60 crore and needs a boost in ticket sales to break even.

Meanwhile, the Punjabi-language film Saunkan Saunkne, starring Ammy Virk, Sargun Mehta and Nimrat Khaira, turned out to be a big surprise, collecting Rs2.15 crore nett on the first day, according to BoxOfficeIndia.com. This is the biggest opening day in East Punjab for a Punjabi film in recent times.

Correction, 17 May 2022: An earlier version of the report said no major Hindi film is lined up for release on 20 May and 27 May. Kangana Ranaut's Dhaakad and Kartik Aaryan's Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 are being released on 20 May while Ayushmann Khurrana's Anek is slated for release on 27 May.
