Anurag Kashyap’s Dobaaraa to open London Indian Film Festival, will be released in India on 1 July

The Taapsee Pannu-starrer will have its world premiere at the UK festival on 23 June.

Anurag Kashyap’s Dobaaraa, starring Taapsee Pannu, will have its world premiere at the upcoming London Indian Film Festival as the opening night film on 23 June.

The news was first reported by the trade website Variety.com. The film will be released in India on 1 July.

The supernatural thriller sees Paanu as a person “trapped between two lives in different decades”. The film is said to be an adaptation of the Spanish film Mirage (2018), directed by Oriol Paulo. The Hindi film is produced by Shobha Kapoor and Ektaa R Kapoor, through Cult Movies, a new unit under Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms, and Sunir Kheterpal and Gaurav Bose of Athena.

Kapoor told Variety.com, “Dobaaraa is our first film under Cult Movies, our new film division, which is set to tell compelling, edgy and genre-bending stories. I feel ecstatic for Dobaaraa and its presence amidst various international celebrated films from around the globe and I can’t wait to showcase the film to Indian audiences on 1 July 2022.”

Kashyap will be present for a question and answer session at the BFI Southbank after the world premiere. The festival, which will present 24 features and 18 shorts, is being held at venues in London, Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds from 23 June to 5 July. The BFI Player streaming platform will host a selection of short films.

The Canadian documentary Superfan: The Nav Bhatia Story, about a Toronto Raptors fan will close the festival.

Other noteworthy films in the festival circuit are also being screened at the festival. Aparna Sen’s The Rapist, starring Konkana Sensharma and Arjun Rampal, will have its European premiere, while Pan Nalin’s Chhello Show and Anik Dutta’s Aparajito, both of which pay homage to cinema, will have their UK premieres.

Aditya Vikram Sengupta’s Once Upon A Time In Calcutta, Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s No Land’s Man, Rebana Liz John’s documentary Ladies Only, Ritwik Pareek’s Dug Dug, and Nithin Lukose’s Paka (River of Blood) are also being screened, alongside titles like The Road To Kuthriyar, No Ground Beneath My Feet, Hatibondhu, Girls For Future, The Very Fishy Trip, Little English and Americanish.
