The collections of a film generally drop with each passing weekday, whichever the week, unless there is a public holiday. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022) bucked the trend yesterday, its second Tuesday in cinemas and a regular workday, with a bigger collection than it recorded on Monday.
After making Rs3.25 crore nett on Monday, the Alia Bhatt-starrer collected Rs3.75 crore yesterday, according to trade website BoxOfficeIndia.com. This takes the film’s second week collection to an impressive Rs29 crore and its grand total to Rs95.72 crore.
Made on a budget of Rs110 crore, according to trade sources, Gangubai Kathiawadi is set to reach the Rs100 crore mark in its second week itself, another rare feat for a film with a woman as the protagonist.
Meanwhile, Nagraj Manjule’s Hindi debut film Jhund (2022), starring Amitabh Bachchan and a host of newcomers, seems to be holding on at the box office despite its poor first weekend. On Monday, the film matched its opening day collection of Rs1 crore nett. Yesterday, the collection went up to Rs1.1 crore.
The numbers suggest Jhund is getting good word-of-mouth publicity. But given its poor opening, the film is likely to struggle to reach the Rs25 crore mark, which is what its prodction budget was. So far, Jhund has made Rs6.85 crore in its first five days in theatres, with the bulk of the collection coming from Maharashtra.
