Director Nipun Dharmadhikari’s Me Vasantrao is based on the life of the legendary classical singer Vasantrao Deshpande.
The late artiste famously essayed the role of Khan Saheb in the classic musical play Katyar Kaljat Ghusali, which was written by Purushottam Darvhekar.
Understanding Vasantrao Deshpande was most difficult, says Nipun Dharmadhikari
The latest song from the film ‘Ghei Chand Makarand’ features visuals from the play, which has been recreated in the movie.
The video depicts the minute details of how a play was staged, right from the use of lights to the process of raising and lowering the curtain. Dharmadhikari has successfully created the vibe of a yesteryear theatre experience. The reaction of the audience is also a significant detail.
A major reason why Katyar Kaljat Ghusali comes alive in the movie is the song ‘Ghei Chand Makarand’, which is like honey to the ears. The song was composed by Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki and features lyrics by Darvhekar himself.
Rahul Deshpande, who plays his grandfather Vasantrao Deshpande in the film, displays his vocal prowess. He appears impressive in the get-up of Khan Saheb. He has also recreated the music for this song.
Subodh Bhave had adapted the play in his directorial debut Katyar Kaljat Ghusali in 2015. That movie saw veteran actor Sachin Pilgaonkar play the role of Khan Saheb.
Produced by Jio Studios, Me Vasantrao will be released in theatres on 1 April.
