After seeing a successful first week at the box office, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama Gangubai Kathiawadi continues to have a good theatrical run, making a grand total of Rs71 crore nett so far.
The Alia Bhatt-starrer made Rs4.50 crore nett yesterday, which was its second Friday, as per figures shared by the trade website BoxOfficeIndia.com.
As per Cinestaan.com's trade sources, the movie was made on a budget of Rs110 crore. It will need to maintain the same momentum in order to emerge as a success story.
Gangubai Kathiawadi hasn’t faced stiff competition from this week’s new release Jhund. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, the film marks the Hindi directorial debut of the acclaimed Marathi filmmaker Nagraj Popatrao Manjule.
Jhund opened with the underwhelming figure of Rs1 crore. Furthermore, a major chunk of the drama's earnings has come from Maharashtra. This was expected given the film’s local flavour and the popularity of the filmmaker.
Jhund review: Nagraj Manjule makes a profound statement about the overlooked India
The film, as per Cinestaan's sources, was made on a modest budget of Rs20-25 crore. But despite that, it looks like it will have a difficult time reaching anywhere close to that number. Jhund has largely received positive reviews and word-of-mouth.
The Hollywood movie The Batman has fared far better. After earning Rs75 lakh on Thursday through evening paid preview shows, the superhero mystery film amassed Rs5.75 crore yesterday.
