Hurdang trailer: Sunny Kaushal leads anti-reservation protest

In 1990, India was rocked by protests against the implementation of the Mandal Commission’s recommendation of a 27% quota in government jobs and public universities for Other Backward Classes (OBCs). 

Now, writer-director Nikhil Nagesh Bhat is coming up with a film that shows what transpired in those few months.

The trailer for the film introduces Sunny Kaushal as Daddu Thakur, who aspires to be an IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer and has the complete support of his girlfriend, played by Nushrratt Bharuccha. Things take a drastic turn when Daddu meets Vijay Varma's character and decides to participate in the anti-reservation protest.

Soon, the whole college becomes a battleground where students take a stand against the government of the day. Daddu gets embroiled in the tussle and is even ready to sacrifice his dream of becoming an IAS officer. This has an adverse impact on his relationship with his girlfriend.

The trailer is interesting, but the makers should have refrained from revealing almost all the main plot points. Sunny Kaushal looks fine as the rebellious student.

One only hopes that unlike Vivek Agnihotri's The Kashmir Files (2022), Hurdang doesn't conceal inconvenient facts in the attempt to create a narrative that suits the current political dispensation.
