Director Prasad Oak’s Chandramukhi, an adaptation of author Vishwas Patil’s bestselling Marathi novel of the same name, deals with the folk art of tamasha and politics.

Chandramukhi is basically a love story between the titular dancer [Amruta Khanvilkar] and a politician [Addinath Kothare]. The song ‘Chandra’ speaks about a woman’s love as she gives a private lavani performance for her lover.

During the trailer launch of Chandramukhi, Ajay Gogavale, one half of the celebrated composer duo Ajay-Atul, said that it is never challenging for Marathi music directors to compose lavani numbers because it is in their blood.

This holds true for ‘Chandra’ as Ajay-Atul has come up with a foot-tapping traditional number that has plenty of old-world charm. They are helped a lot by Guru Thakur’s lyrics. But the song wouldn’t be what it is without Shreya Ghoshal’s endearing vocals. Her voice suits Khanvilkar’s character.

Khanvilkar gives a good performance, both through her movements and expressions. Kothare mostly only has to stare at her lovingly.

Chandramukhi is Oak’s third directorial venture after Kaccha Limbu (2017) and Hirkani (2019)

Produced by Golden Ratio Films and Planet Marathi, Chandramukhi will be released in theatres on 29 April.
