Murder and the theft of an ancient Vishnu idol drive the plot of Joydeep Mukherjee’s upcoming thriller The Eken, which stars Anirban Chakrabarti as the titular sleuth.
While the teaser showed the detective in a serious avatar, the trailer promises a thriller with ample entertaining sequences and hilarious moments.
Set in Darjeeling, the trailer of the film, inspired by the Hoichoi series Eken Babu, which also stars Chakrabarti, begins with the discovery of a corpse in a forest. The jolly Eken and his companions Bapi (Somak Ghosh) and Pramatha (Suhotra Mukhopadhyay) are then shown as they get excited about their trip to the town in the Himalayan foothills.
Film star Bipasha Mitra (Paayel Sarkar) bumps into Eken in Darjeeling, and after some funny interaction sequences, persuades the starstruck sleuth to investigate the case of her missing idol, which was put on exhibition a few days before. The police also request Eken to look into the matter. Meanwhile, an intriguing scene of an archaeologist exploring the old temples of Bengal is shown.
In Eken’s own words, the plot thickens when Devraj Singh (Debasish Mondal), a friend of Bipasha, reports the death of the assistant manager of his heritage hotel. The action-packed trailer seems promising.
Excited about the theatrical release of the film, Chakrabarti said, “It has been almost four years since I’ve been playing the character of Ekenbabu and the immense love which I have received from the audience is unmatchable.
The Eken is based on Sujan Dasgupta’s original story, while the script and the dialogue have been written by Padmanabha Dasgupta.
Chakrabarti added, “It is the result of their love that we are coming to the theatres this time with our new adventure and SVF has played a huge part in taking Ekenbabu to the big screen. Lastly, the classy direction of Joydeep Mukherjee will take the movie to a whole new level.”
According to Sarkar, the extraordinary performance of Chakrabarti and the astonishing plot will make The Eken an entertaining out-of-the-box thriller. “I am delighted to be a part of it, and working with Anirban and the brilliant newcomers Suhotra and Debasish was a great experience for me. I’m sure that the audience will shower the same amount of love on The Eken on the silver screen that they have for the Ekenbabu series.”
The Eken will be released in theatres on 14 April.
